Gagar mayang (kembang jambe) (Bunga Pinang / Areca catechu)
Compounds
The leaves and seeds of this plant contain several important bioactive compounds. Condensed tannins (procyanidins) are polyphenolic compounds present in high concentrations, providing strong astringent properties as well as antioxidant activity. Flavonoids, such as epicatechin and catechin, act as antioxidants that protect cells from damage and support skin tissue regeneration. Areca alkaloids (arecoline) are present in much lower amounts compared to the seeds, yet still exert a stimulatory effect on the parasympathetic nervous system. Saponins are natural cleansing compounds that also possess antimicrobial activity.
Benefits
Jambe flowers have a variety of beneficial traditional uses. For postpartum recovery, a decoction or bath of the flowers acts as a mild uterotonic, helping to shrink the uterus and tighten the pelvic muscles after childbirth, commonly known as "Sari Rapet." Their natural astringent properties are effective in stopping diarrhea and dysentery, as well as tightening skin pores when used in scrubs or baths. Empirically, crushed young jambe flowers are also used as a cold compress to reduce fever in children. In addition, antioxidants such as procyanidins help maintain skin elasticity, prevent premature wrinkles, and brighten skin tone.
