Ranti / lencak sawit (Solanum nigrum)

Compounds

Ranti leaves contain various bioactive compounds with diverse health benefits. Solanine and solasonine are the main steroidal glycoalkaloids and act as a “double-edged sword”: at low doses, they provide anti-inflammatory effects, while at high doses, they can be neurotoxic. Solasodine, an aglycone compound, has antiproliferative potential to inhibit cancer cell growth and also exhibits strong anti-inflammatory properties. Anthocyanins, the purple to black pigments in fully ripe skin, serve as cell-protective antioxidants. Saponins act as natural cleansers with expectorant activity, helping to thin mucus and providing antimicrobial effects.

Benefits

Ranti leaves offer a range of traditional benefits for skin health, the digestive system, and excretory organs. For skin conditions such as eczema, sores, chickenpox, or itching (pruritus), boiled or crushed ranti leaves are used as a cleanser due to their anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. As an antipyretic, the active compounds in the leaves can lower body temperature, either as a compress or a low-dose herbal drink, particularly for children. Ranti leaf extracts also have cytoprotective effects on the stomach, reducing excess gastric acid secretion and naturally protecting the stomach lining from ulcers. Additionally, ranti leaves exhibit hepatoprotective and nephroprotective properties, helping safeguard the liver and kidneys from damage caused by certain chemical toxins.
