Tumbar jenar (Coriandrum sativum)
Compounds
Coriander seed essential oil contains a variety of beneficial bioactive compounds. Linalool (60–70%) is the dominant terpenoid, providing its characteristic aroma while acting as a sedative and stomach protector. Petroselinic acid, a rare monounsaturated fatty acid unique to coriander, has anti-inflammatory effects and supports skin health. Geranyl acetate contributes a floral-fruity aroma and exhibits antifungal activity. Additionally, dodecenal, an aldehyde compound in the oil, has been shown to be twice as effective as the antibiotic Gentamicin in killing Salmonella bacteria.
Benefits
These dried seeds are renowned for their diverse health benefits. As a specialist for bloating and digestive discomfort (carminative), their essential oil effectively relaxes smooth muscles in the digestive tract, relieves gas, and eases colic or cramps. They also act as a cholesterol-lowering agent (hypolipidemic) by stimulating the conversion of cholesterol into bile acids in the liver, significantly reducing LDL and triglyceride levels. Their insulin-releasing and insulin-mimetic activities help regulate blood sugar in people with diabetes. Additionally, the high linalool content provides a calming effect on the nervous system, helping to alleviate anxiety and mild insomnia.
