Alang-alang wangi (Vetiveria zizanoides / Chrysopogon zizanioides)
Compounds
Vetiver roots contain several important bioactive compounds. Vetiverol and vetivone, complex sesquiterpene compounds that make up 50–75% of the essential oil, provide a heavy earthy aroma, act as fixatives for scent retention, and have strong sedative effects. Khusimol, a sesquiterpene alcohol, helps strengthen the immune system and stabilize the nervous system. Benzoic acid offers natural preservative and antimicrobial properties, while isovalencenic acid contributes to anti-inflammatory activity and cell regeneration.
Benefits
Vetiver roots offer a wide range of benefits. As a central nervous system relaxant, its deep, calming aroma—known as the “Oil of Tranquility”—effectively alleviates insomnia, chronic anxiety, mental fatigue, and helps improve focus, making it commonly used as a supportive therapy for ADHD. Vetiver also aids in skin regeneration, helping to fade scars, stretch marks, and acne marks by accelerating the growth of new skin tissue. In herbal formulations or perfumes, vetiver acts as a scent fixative, retaining the volatile aroma molecules of other ingredients to make the fragrance last longer. Additionally, vetiver oil or pastes help improve local blood circulation, relieve muscle pain and joint stiffness, and serve as a natural insect repellent, effectively deterring termites, moths, and lice without harming humans.
